Houston Mayor Annise Parker to Speak at September Chamber Luncheon Houston Mayor Annise Parker will be speaking at the Chamber’s September Third Tuesday Luncheon. The luncheon is being presented by Houston City Council Member Mike Sullivan and will be held at 11:30 am, on Tuesday, September 21 at Kingwood Country Club. Gold Sponsors for the luncheon include Matrix Structural Engineers, Inc. and Randall Reed's Planet Dodge - Humble/Kingwood. Parker was sworn in to her first term as mayor of Houston on January 4, 2010. She is Houston’s 61st Mayor, one of only two women to hold the City’s highest elected office. As the City's chief executive officer she is responsible for all aspects of the general management of the City and for seeing that all laws and ordinances are enforced. Prior to her election as Mayor, Ms. Parker served for six years as Houston City Controller and six years as an at-large member of Houston City Council. She is the only person in Houston history to hold the offices of council member, controller and mayor.

Lake Houston Area Chambers Education Committee Awards $5,000 in Student Scholarships and Teacher Grants
The Lake Houston Area Chamber of Commerce’s Education Committee will award several scholarships totaling $3,000 to area high school seniors and $2,000 to the Humble ISD Education Foundation for teacher grants at their annual Scholarship Reception at 4 pm, May 13 at the Chamber Office. The Chamber’s Education Committee raised money for scholarships and teacher grants at their PanKakes for Kids breakfast this past February. The committee received more than 45 scholarship applications from Humble ISD and Spring ISD high school seniors. Recipients are awarded based primarily on need along with consideration for their academic performance, community involvement and leadership. The Education Committee will also give the Humble ISD Education Foundation with a check for $2,000. Money awarded will be distributed in the form of “Innovative Education Grants” to district staff in May.
